Chapter 26

Fort Sill to Wichita Mountains, Kiowa Lake, and Deer Creek, Oklahoma

Alex watched Amber leave with growing concern. She could be in great danger, and he wouldn't be there to protect her. They both had a job to do, and he knew that. His life had changed more than he ever expected. Three months ago, this would've been the greatest opportunity he could ever have. A chance to walk on a live volcano, other than the ones he had grown up on. Now he was afraid, for Amber, and himself as well.

He glanced back in the room. Trina sat and read by candlelight, waiting on Tam and Joe to wake up. It wasn't only for him that he wanted Amber and himself to survive. It was for these two as well. Tam and Joe had only known them for a day. Their attachment though fast, was a bond he didn't want to break. An unspoken promise with them, and with Amber.

Footsteps pounded down the hall. Corporal Puma walked around a distant corner with two young men beside him. He hurried up to Alex. "Sorry, these are all I can find. Call them by their nicknames Jax and Trax. They've at least been to the range you're going to. Good day." His feet clumped together, before he scurried off down the hallway.

Alex tried to grin at the two young men. "I guess you haven't been here long."

One stepped forward, and held out his hand. "I'm Jax. No, we shouldn't be doing this. We didn't quite complete basic training. That's why we don't have a title or any other job right now. I'm not sure if basic training is going to exist anymore, so we can't try again."

"Perhaps not like it was." Alex said. "I guess we better go. It could be a long day and night." He picked up his pack and followed the two silent young men.

It would be lonely without Amber. Thinking about her hair, her eyes, and her laughter caused an ache deep in his chest. Fighting for breath, he struggled to keep up. If it was going to be like this, he couldn't think about her while he was doing his job.

They went out a side door, and Jax unplugged a vehicle. "Your friend is checking the area the wind power comes from for nights. It doesn't work anymore. Solar power for daytime energy. No other backup power."

Alex climbed in. The bent and rusty roll cage wasn't much protection against flying rocks, or if the vehicle rolled over. It was better than no protection.

"It'll be a long drive up Deer Creek. We've been checking out the local hotspots the last few weeks. This one needs an expert opinion." Jax backed the vehicle up, and they were on their way.

"What is the name of the formerly extinct volcano in question?" Alex rattled around, strapped in between packs.

"We don't know. We can't find a name on any map. I'm sure someone, somewhere, knows the name," Trax said.

Jax didn't follow the road.
